Boxing equipment
Everyone knows, boxing gloves are essential. However, there exist other types of boxing equipment designed for athletes' protection.
The purpose of safety boxing equipment is to avoid injuries. Thus, it should never be neglected.
The following equipment is used:
Groin Guard
Protects the groin from accidental low punches. Punches below the belt are illegal in boxing. However, body shot may land low by accident. Groin guard significantly reduces the impact of low blow and is essential for both sparring and competitions.
Mouthguard
Made out of silicon and is individually customized by molding it in he hot water. Mouthguard's purpose is to provide the shield between boxer's jaws thus preventing damage to the teeth when the boxer's jaw is struck.
Protective headgear
Required for all amateur bouts. Headgear is not worn during professional bouts but is required for sparring to soften the impact and avoid cuts from punches and accidental head butts.
Headgear is made from foam and is covered by leather. There exist multiple types and shapes of headgear. Classical headgear, sanctioned for amateur bouts covers temple, forehead, eyebrows and jaws while the eyes and most of the face remain open, resulting into an optimal visibility.
Boxing gloves
Boxing gloves are made from a dense foam, covered by leather. Gloves' weight is specified with the latin letters usually on the label inside the glove (ex: OZ10)
Amateur and professional boxing employ different shapes of the gloves. Amateur gloves are of round shape and contain more padding within the fist, softening the punch. Professional gloves are of oval shape, with most of the padding around the wrist. This allows for complete closure of the fist allowing for stronger punch.
Boxing handwraps are placed prior to wearing the gloves. The wraps are 3-5 meters long, 5 cm wide. They are essential for both amateur and professional boxing and are required for hand protection.
