Professional boxing

Professional and amateur boxing contain the following differences:

Rules:

Professional boxer receives monetary compensation for his bout which is prohibited for amateurs.
Professional boxers compete with no t-shirts and head gears.
Professional bout last from 4 to 12 rounds (based on fighters' skill and experience. Title fights are usually 12 rounds). Amateur bouts las 3 rounds, 3 minutes each.
For professional fights, scoring is based on individual rounds and the winner is declared based on the rounds won. Scoring is made via following: 10-9 – to the winner who landed more frequently throughout the round. 10-8 – to the boxer which knocked his opponent down in that round. 10-7 – to the fighter scoring two knockdowns... For amateurs, scores are based on number of landed punches throughout the entire bout.
Either professional or amateur rules are the same in regards to preliminary stoppage – fight can end via knockout (boxer is not back on his feet at count 10), fight can be stopped due to referee's concern for one of the fighter's condition or by the boxer's corner, which can throw the towel on the ring.

Techniques and strategy:

Different rules affect fighters' strategies and techniques greatly. Amateur bouts are fought in a faster pace due to a smaller time frame and defensive strategies of the fighters.
Due to a longer time frame of professional bout fighters choose a slower pace showing a variety of their techniques. The scoring system, which allows the boxer to win the round due via knockdown provides further encouragement for power shots and desire to win the fight by knockout.
Based on statistics, the majority of amateur fights are resolved by judges' decisions whereas most of the professionals bouts do not go distance.

Organizations:

Unlike the amateurs, whose bouts are sanctioned by AIBA boxing federation, professional boxers compete under the certain boxing organization. The following organizations are the most prestigious and their titles are wanted by all professional boxers:

World Boxing Association-WBA
World Boxing Council-WBC
International Boxing Federation-IBF
World Boxing Organization-WBO
